A History of Weinheimer & Son

Adolph Weinheimer was born on March 10, 1871 in Fredericksburg.  He was a partner in a machine and hardware store in Fredericksburg, named Mathisen and Weinheimer.  It was located across from the Nimitz Hotel. He moved to Stonewall in the early 1900’s.  Weinheimer & Company opened for business on March 3, 1906 by brothers Adolph and Jacob Weinheimer.

In 1920, Alvin H. Weinheimer, son of Adolph, became a partner and the name was changed to Weinheimer & Son.  Alvin H. Weinheimer’s son, Alvin F., joined the family business in 1952.  His daughter, DeAnn Hampton, joined the business in 1996.  The current owners of the store are Bernice Weinheimer and her daughter, DeAnn Hampton, great-granddaughter of Aldof.

The store was originally located on the section of U.S. Highway 290 that is now known as Ranch Road 1 in Stonewall.  The U.S. Post Office was also located in this building and operated by the Weinheimers.  In 1956, the store was moved to its present location due to the relocation of Highway 290.  The Post Office was located in an additional room adjacent to the store until 1996 when a new Post Office was built next to the store.  The store has always been a general merchandise store trying to serve the needs of the community.  Originally, the store carried many items that were necessary to maintain a farming community such as horse collars, gasoline, feed.  It even had a barber shop, saloon, and bought and sold chickens, eggs, cotton, animal hides, and pecans.  Today the store still carries a complete line of groceries, produce, fresh meats, boots, jeans, hardware, housewares, paint, veterinary medicine, fishing and hunting supplies and anything else anyone might need.  Our motto is “If we don’t have it, we will get it.”

A point of interest is that Lyndon B. Johnson came to the old store as a child and did business there during his years in the White House.

Today DeAnn is the principal owner/operator of the store with Bernice being retired.  Our business philosophy is to listen and serve the needs of the customers in the community.  “We don’t sell a lot of any one thing, we sell a little bit of everything.”

The store continues to serve the needs of the community with its “One stop shopping.”
